Why is hand dipping so important?

Hand dipping is a lost art that we keep alive everyday at The Original Good's Candies in Kennard, IN. It's the way everyone made candy a hundred or so years ago. Over time candy makers switched to machine dipping or "enrobing" to produce chocolate covered treats because, like all methods of mass production, it is faster, cheaper, and easier since it requires no specialized labor.

Our "dippers" are their own special breed of artisans, carefully sculpting each piece to delicious perfection. Some have practiced their art, dipping candy for our family for twenty to forty years. Their dipping style is as unique as their personalities and a trained eye can even distinguish which dipper produced a given piece of candy at a glance. We would never dream of replacing them with a machine.

Perhaps most importantly, hand dipping enables us to use the highest quality of chocolate available, in its purest form. Our chocolate is far too thick to run through an enrobing machine and would have to be thinned. Any candy maker using such a machine must first thin their chocolate. This is typically done with vegetable oil, cocoa butter, paraffin, or some combination. We simply will not convert to this process.

Are you open year round?

No, we are a seasonal operation, opening on October 1st every year and closing on Motherís Day, every year. We also shut down for two weeks after Christmas so that we can replenish our inventory and re-open on January 15th.

Why is your store open seasonally, instead of all year?

First and foremost, it is due to the lack of paraffin or other preservatives in our chocolates. It is difficult to produce and/or ship our candies in the warm summer months due to heat. We will not compromise the quality of our chocolates by adding these sorts of preservatives.

Secondly, our "candy season" as we call it, encompasses all the major "candy holidays" as we are open for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, and even the "Hallmark Holidays" like Boss' Day, Administrative Professionals Day, and Sweetest Day. The summer holidays are not typically associated with candy related gifts.

Third, we and our staff work tireless hours during the hectic, holiday seasons to keep up with the demand for our products. Twelve hour work days are the norm with no days off and we need the summer months to recoup so we can do it again the next year!

Finally, it is simply the way we have always operated, and to quote one of our founding Fathers, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

In the future, we are considering keeping a limited inventory to fulfill orders exclusively through our on-line store during the "off-season". †These orders would all have to be shipped with cold packaging and not picked up at our store as we would still not keep business hours during that time period.

Is your store operated by the same family that started the business?

Yes it is. Kevin Vickery, the current owner/operator of The Original Good's Candies is the Great-Grandson on John & Pauline Good, the founders of Good's Candies in 1965, and the Great-Great Nephew of Garrett & Deliah Lowery who began the family tradition decades before that. The business has passed through the generations on the maternal side of our family, which is why the owner's have not been named "Good" for several years. Do you make all of your candy in house?

Yes, we make 100% of our candies in house, from scratch using the same recipes and hand dipping techniques that we have used for over four generations. The only possible exceptions are the centers to our "chips", which we order in and then hand dip ourselves, and the chocolate stars, which are made from the same superior quality chocolate that we use every day but come from our chocolate supplier already shaped in the star design. Our standards for quality far exceed the typical candy seller.

Do you have Holiday Specials?

Yes, we offer a wide variety of specialty items, designed to fit all of your holiday candy needs. We also offer free gift wrapping for any box of candy. The wrapping paper is changed throughout the year for the given holiday season. Our gift baskets are themed for Fall, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, and Mother's Day. We have an extensive selection of heart shaped boxes for Valentine's Day and six sizes of chocolate eggs, filled with candy available at Easter. We generally begin selling holiday specific items approximately one month before the holiday.

Do you still make chocolate Easter eggs?

Yes we do. We still make the chocolate eggs, filled with individually wrapped pieces of our candies in six different sizes using the same 100 year old molds that we have been using since we opened in 1965. We will on some occasions even make them during other times of year for a special request. In addition to filling them with our delicious candies, if you have something special that you would like inside the egg, just get it to us, and we will put it in for you. The list of things we have placed in a chocolate egg for our customers to give as a gift is far too long to list, but some of the highlights include; engagement rings, diamond earrings, love notes, photos, birth announcements, etc.

Do you ship your candy?

Yes, of course. We ship all orders via insured, Priority Mail with the US Postal Service. †This method guarantees arrival within 2-3 business days. If requested, we can also ship via insured, Express Mail for overnight delivery for additional charges. We only mail packages on Mon, Tues, and Wed to ensure freshness. During some months and when shipping to certain locations with warmer temperatures, we can only guarantee your shipment will arrive safely if cold packaging is used. Additional charges apply.

Do you offer gift wrapping?

Yes, we will gladly wrap any box of candy for you at no additional charge. We have a wide variety of various holiday and "all occasion" wrapping paper. If you are ordering on-line, your candy will automatically come gift wrapped as the wrap helps insure freshness as the candy travels to you.

Do you make sugar free candy and is it safe for diabetics?

Yes, and while most small candy businesses, simply order in sugar free versions of the candies they make, and repackage them for resale, we actually make our sugar free candies in house. We have not reformulated our recipes in such a manner to make sugar free versions of all our products, but we do use sugar free chocolate from our supplier to make several varieties of sugar free bark.

The sugar free chocolate is artificially sweetened with maltitol and the different nuts have varying amounts of natural sugar. For this reason, we call it "No sugar added". Please consult your physician as we cannot make statements concerning the varied individual results from consuming sugar free and/or no sugar added candies.

Do you sell your candy at other locations?

No. We sell only at our store in Kennard, IN and through this website. We turn down offers literally every day from individuals that want to sell our candy at other locations because we cannot effectively monitor the quality once it has left our store.

Do you offer sales or other promotions?

No. We strive to make the highest quality product at the most affordable price possible. We do not overprice our items so that we can later discount them for perceived savings through sales. Fortunately, we are often unable to keep up with our demand, so there is no need to discount our inventory. We proudly stand behind our product and do not feel the need to over advertise or run promotions and other gimmicks in order to gain exposure. Frankly, we would rather be the best kept secret than the next big thing.

Do you wholesale your candy or offer quantity discounts?

No. We are a high-end chocolate manufacturer and retailer but not a wholesaler. We turn down offers literally every day from individuals who want to sell our candy at other locations because we cannot effectively monitor the quality once it has left our store.

Are you connected to the candy shop in Anderson, Indiana?

No. We are The Original Good's Candies and are completely unaffiliated with any other operation using similar names. While there is some distant family relation, the businesses operate totally independently. No one from that location has ever been associated with The Original Good's Candies and vice versa.

How can I tell if my Good's Candy is from the original or an imitation?

There are a few ways to make this distinction:

  1. Where was it purchased? If it came from anywhere but this website or our store in Kennard, IN, it is not from The Original Good's Candies.
  2. If you received the candy as a gift and do not know where it was purchased, examine the box. 'Our box is the same cream colored box with brown print that we have been using since 1965. Look for the words, "The Original" in our logo and the registered trademark symbol after "Candies". The box also features our Kennard address and telephone number. If it is not a standard box of chocolates that you are questioning i.e., heart shaped box, bagged item, look for a decal somewhere on the package with the same information previously mentioned.
  3. If for some reason you do not have access to the box or bag, simply take a bite of the candy and then do as our slogan says, "Taste the difference".
  4. If all else fails, you may bring the candy to our store in Kennard and any employee will be able to tell by looking at the candy if it was made in our store or elsewhere. Unfortunately, due to high volume of requests, we will no longer be able to offer refunds or exchange boxes of candy that were purchased elsewhere.

Do you offer corporate gifts?

Yes, many of our customers are businesses that give our chocolates and other candies as gifts to their clients, vendors, or employees. We offer gift boxes and baskets in several sizes to best fit your company's needs. With enough lead time, we can have customized boxes made featuring your company's logo. One of our biggest customers has been giving around three thousand pound of The Original Good's Candies to his clients at Christmas for over 30 years!

If I email or fax you an address list of my clients, friends or family, will you ship the candy for me?

Absolutely. Just send us the list of names and addresses and we take care of everything else. We will enclose a hand written greeting card or you may send us your own personal cards to be enclosed at no additional charge. Yes, you can. During the check out process of your on-line order, you will be asked if it is to be picked up or shipped. Please see our business hours if you are planning a pick up.

What information do you collect about me? Will you sell any of it to a 3rd party or give out my email address?

When placing an on-line order, we need to know your name, email address, billing address, credit card number, expiration date, and the three digit security code from the reverse side of the card. We use this information to process your order only and will not disclose it to anyone, ever.
